Chicago-born rapper, Da Brat has been a fixture in the entertainment industry for years. With hits like “Fuckdafied” and “What’chu Like,” Da Brat launched her career in the early ’90s and hasn’t looked back since. Though she no longer performs as much as she used to, the 46-year-old rapper has remained visible in other ways.
Along with Real Housewives of Atlanta’s Porsha Williams, Da Brat hosts Dish Nation, a daily radio show where she gives her opinions on popular events, celebrities and pop cultural moments. However, until very recently, the rapper has kept her personal life under wraps.
Now, amid her engagement to Jessica Dupart aka, BB Judy, the CEO of Kaleidoscope Hair Product, Da Brat has come out as a lesbian. However, she said it took her over 25 years to do so because of her grandma.
Da Brat was the first female rapper to go Platinum
In 1994, Da Brat released her debut album Funkdafied under Jermaine Dupri’s So So Def Records. She was the first female rapper on the label to release an album and it would certainly pay off for her.
Styled after Snoop Dogg, Funkdafied sold over one million records making Da Brat the first female rapper to go platinum. The success of the album was shocking to everyone including Dupri and Da Brat. “When I did Funkdafied with JD, he was like, ‘Okay, look Brat. I’ma tell you now — female rappers pretty much only go gold,” the rapper revealed on The Mo’Nique Show. “So if it doesn’t do whatever, don’t be disappointed. And I was like, ‘Okay…I just want to do music.’”
Da Brat casually came out in celebration of her birthday
Following Funkdafied, Da Brat found success with her subsequent albums, Anuthatantrum and Unrestricted. However, in 2007, she ran into some major legal troubles where she stuck a woman in an Atlanta nightclub with a glass bottle. The rapper was sent to prison until 2011 and she was ordered to pay the woman $6 million.
Since her release, Da Brat has bounced back with Dish Nation and being cast in the stage play version of the film Set It Off. Now, her love-life is also center stage.
There have always been rumors about Da Brat’s sexuality, but she hasn’t addressed them until now. There had been rumors about Da Brat and Dupart’s relationship, and they finally went public in February 2020 when the hair mogul was spotted wearing an engagement ring.
In March, Dupart shared a video of herself surprising Da Brat with an early birthday gift, a decked out Bently. She captioned the video,
This video was taken 3•16 …. Her birthday is 4•14 but with the way things were going and my excitement I couldn’t wait 😭😣 it’s so crazy cuz I ordered a CUSTOM bow for the presentation and didn’t even wait on it 🤣🤣🤣 SHE HATES TO ACCEPT ANY GIFTS FROM ME , that’s y she was running . But she deserves the WORLD and so much more 🌎 I’ve never been SOOOO happy and honestly think that it’s not only because of our connection but also because we really been to ourselves. Da Brat waited to come out because of her grandma
Now, Da Brat is sharing why she waited so long to come out. “I was always told you want to be f—able to men and women to sell records — you don’t want anybody to discriminate,” she told Variety. “It was absolutely my decision. I mean, you saw what happened to people like Ellen: Remember when she lost her TV show, and all these horrible things were happening? People were totally against it.”
The rapper’s late grandma was another reason she remained quiet. “My grandmother has passed away, but she was sanctified,” she explained. “I would not want anyone in the church to judge her because of what I do. You never want to hurt the people that raised you; you don’t want to disappoint them. My mom is not, like, jumping for joy. She’s not going to condone it, but she loves me unconditionally. No one in my family has said anything bad or degrading.”
