Wondering what’s it all about The Sewers in Stardew Valley? How to unlock them and why you should do so? Then read on this straight-to-the-point guide to the Stardew Vallew Sewers!
The Stardew Valley Sewer is located south of Pelican Town. The sewer is the locked location where you usually hear the ghost/whale noise if you happen to be around.
You can unlock The Sewers by getting the sewer key which is known as the rusty key. The Rusty key is generally obtained from the museum curator who is Gunther.
It also has one of the most interesting features, namely the statue of Uncertainty along with a chance of getting legendary fish. Now let’s get a bit more in depth with all of these below!
IMPORTANT: There are several spoilers ahead, so proceed with caution.
Stardew Valley Sewer Key: How to Unlock The Sewers in the Game
The Stardew Valley Sewer unlocks if you have the Sewer Key also known as the Rusty Key. You will get this key after donating 60 artifacts to the museum.
Once you manage to get this done, Gunther will visit you and after the cutscene, you will get the Rusty Key (as seen in the screenshot above).
The sewer can be accessed through the sewer cover south of Pelican Town or through the grates in the south of Cindersap Forest.
Here is some trivia about this feature, in case you want to know everything about it:
- Stardew Valley’s Rusty Key is first referenced by Vincent and Jas in a cutscene in Cindersap forest.
- The cutscene triggers after spring 11 of year 1. It can be accessed by entering the forest between 9 am and 4 pm on Monday, Thursday, or Sunday.
- If you have obtained it, you will find it in the wallet on the skills tab in the player’s menu.
There are lots of other great features that you can unlock in the game via modding. Make sure to check out my previous article about the best Stardew Valley mods to get started!

The Statue of Uncertainty in Stardew Valley
Once you get access to The Sewers in the game, you will also find The Statue of Uncertainty. This statue allows you to change your profession after donating 10,000 gold.
This is really useful in case you are in need of a change. Just select the skill that you want changed, pay the money and go to bed.
As the night passes, the game will ask you to change your profession – and you will select the one you want to change to. Pretty useful for those who had a change of mind or want to try something new.
The Sewers: Legendary Fish (Mutant Carp)
A Mutant Carp is a legendary fish that you can capture if you go fishing in The Sewers. There are five legendary fish in Stardew Valley, so you know you’re in good company if you manage to catch one.
Of course, the Mutant Carp is not the only thing that you can fish for in The Sewers. On the contrary – it has some really low drop rates.
Most likely, you will catch plenty of White Algae, Trash, and Green Algae while fishing here.
The good news is that you don’t need to meet any special requirements to unlock the Mutant Carp after you get access to the sewers.
There is a 10% chance to catch the mutant carp every time you fish in the sewer. It has a difficulty of 80 and the season, date or day/night have no influence over it.
Wrapping up
The Sewers are probably one of the most difficult early things that you can unlock in the game. It’s especially difficult because chances are you won’t pay attention to the cutscene that mentions the Rusty Key and you probably have no idea how to get it.
But now, things should be clearer: not only that you know how to unlock the sewers, but you also know that it’s worth doing so because there are many great in-game features awaiting there.
