He had asked the supremely talented A. R. Rahman to compose a song with the words ‘Jai Ho’ for his film, Yuvraaj (2008). The resulting song was not included in the Salman Khan-starrer and instead ended up being used in Danny Boyle‘s sleeper hit, Slumdog Millionaire (2008). The song became a worldwide sensation and even won the Academy Award for ‘Best Original Song’ at the 81st Academy Awards in 2009.

In 2006, Ghai opened the Whistling Woods International Institute for Film, Television and Media Arts with much fanfare. The institute offers training in various aspects of filmmaking like direction, production, cinematography, acting, and animation. Furthermore, The Hollywood Reporter included the reputed institute on its list of ‘The Best Film Schools in the World’ in 2014.

Inspired by John Lennon, he made (usually) the villains in his earlier films wear round glasses and a beard. Jaaved Jaaferi in Meri Jung (1985) and Anupam Kher in Karma (1986) are some of the instances of this.

Ghai once stated that Hrithik Roshan and Shahrukh Khan were the only actors who treated him with respect irrespective of his career highs and lows. He went on to add that actors like Anil Kapoor, Jackie Shroff, and Sanjay Dutt took him for granted even though he helped catapult them to fame.

He was accused of s**ual assault in 2018 by a woman who had previously worked as his assistant. She alleged that Ghai spiked her drinks with drugs and ra*ed her at a hotel in Lonavala. The ace director vehemently denied the allegations.
