Young Sheldon Season 5...what happened?

Anyone else notice how dark the show is getting? Parents fighting all the time; unwanted pregnancy; religious bigotry and Sheldon is so less funny. What the hell is going on? It's part of the story arc previously established in Big Bang Theory.

by Anonymousreply 2May 13, 2022 7:15 PM

What I want to know is what happened to Meemaw that changed her to the fun and vibrant woman as played by Annie Potts to the mean old lady portrayed in BBT.

I wonder if they will address THAT before the series ends.

by Anonymousreply 3May 13, 2022 7:18 PM

I've been waiting for George to have his heart attack for the last two seasons.

by Anonymousreply 4May 13, 2022 7:19 PM

I never watched "Big Bang"....So all of this was mentioned on that show? Where does it end up?

by Anonymousreply 5May 13, 2022 7:51 PM

Watch Young Sheldon to find out R5.

by Anonymousreply 6May 13, 2022 7:54 PM

Sheldon's also moving into puberty, a time that is dark for most.

The darker tone of the show also reflects the darkness that is entering Sheldon's life with puberty.

by Anonymousreply 7May 13, 2022 8:08 PM

Next episode" Sheldon has a wet dream," will lighten things up.

Don't forget about the smoking by Mary and Pastor Rob and the ownership of a gambling hall by Meemaw.

While it isn't likely I have always wondered what they would do if Young Shelton was on so long that he graduated from college and moved to Pasadena, I guess they could drag it out a few years before he moved in with Leonard.

by Anonymousreply 10May 13, 2022 11:42 PM

I am glad they finally stopped having Shelton and his sister sharing a bedroom. Any normal family would have had Shelton share a bedroom with his older brother, not a sister.

by Anonymousreply 11May 13, 2022 11:44 PM

[quote]While it isn't likely I have always wondered what they would do if Young Shelton was on so long that he graduated from college and moved to Pasadena, I guess they could drag it out a few years before he moved in with Leonard.

Yes, it's unlikely to happen. And we've got quite a ways to go before we have to worry about that.

Season 5 is set in 1992 and each season takes up a year. The Big Bang Theory debuted in 2007. So, at the moment, we've got a 15 year cushion.

by Anonymousreply 12May 13, 2022 11:54 PM

I love this show, but only up to early season 3 on Netflix in the UK. Hope it stays good and doesn’t dip in quality.

by Anonymousreply 13May 14, 2022 12:04 AM

Both excellent writing and superb acting by the family supporting cast has also caused a noticeable shift of attention away from Sheldon himself. These new darker story lines are one way to showcase their talents.

by Anonymousreply 14May 14, 2022 12:05 AM

R12. Not quite a 15 year cushion. Didn't Sheldon and Leonard meet years before the start of the show? Their first meeting was shown as a backflash in season 2 or 3.

by Anonymousreply 15May 14, 2022 12:08 AM

I'm glad to see more of the parents and other kids.......Sheldon and the actor playing him - ugh. Of course Sheldon was my least liked character in BBT as well.

Did "Georgie" ever appear on BBT? I can't remember.

by Anonymousreply 16May 14, 2022 2:06 AM

Sheldon is a pain in the ass on the set. They "fixed" it by giving him very few lines. That is why the rest of the cast has been elevated..(And they can act, unlike queeny IA)..There is a reason Missy and Georgie have far more lines than PrissyBoy..Also Annie Potts doesn't put up with it which is why you don't see them in solo scenes anymore.

by Anonymousreply 17May 14, 2022 2:11 AM

I'm guessing the show will end with S7.

by Anonymousreply 18May 14, 2022 2:14 AM

Really, R17? Wow. 😳

Iain is starting to look way older. His voice has changed as well.

Lots of people are upset by the darker tone of the show. It’s funny and pathetic that the complete hypocrite “Christians” from Mary’s church turned their backs on them so completely. She got fired! And the family was told to leave the church.

Mary is fast becoming a shrew. And also, apparently is having impure thoughts for that young pastor.

by Anonymousreply 19May 14, 2022 3:41 AM

Brother Georgie did appear on BBT.

He was played by that actor that was in Stand by Me, Jerry O’Connell.

by Anonymousreply 20May 14, 2022 3:52 AM

He was in three episodes.

by Anonymousreply 21May 14, 2022 3:53 AM

R17 interesting! What’s your source?

I don't watch this. Any good?

I watched TBBT and I do remember mention of Sheldon's Dad having an affair and dying fairly young.

by Anonymousreply 25May 14, 2022 7:00 PM

I’m hoping he misunderstood the situation and his dad didn’t have an affair.

Mary, on the other hand, looks seriously tempted by that young pastor.

by Anonymousreply 26May 14, 2022 7:08 PM

Between the actor and the writing for the character, the mom is simply painful to watch nearly all the time. It's getting very Eugene O'Neill

by Anonymousreply 27May 14, 2022 7:56 PM

The actress who play's Sheldon's mom is Laurie Metcalfe's daughter. I loved when I found that out.

by Anonymousreply 28May 14, 2022 8:06 PM

R25 do not read this thread and start watching the first season of Young Sheldon! It’s great!

by Anonymousreply 29May 14, 2022 8:13 PM

I really love the show and find myself bummed whenever an episode ends. For me it ends too quickly!

by Anonymousreply 30May 14, 2022 8:14 PM

I’m one of the few watching this show who did not care for BBT so it’s all a surprise for me.

by Anonymousreply 31May 14, 2022 8:30 PM

I had low expectations and was suprised that it was quite charming.

by Anonymousreply 32May 14, 2022 8:33 PM

R31 Agreed. I mostly hated all the characters in TBBT, especially Sheldon. I could only take him in very small doses. I love every character in YS. Especially Zoe Perry and the one who plays Missy. They are the heart of the show. IA is not queeny. Typical revolting DLers trying to sex up/gay up a normal kid. Fans are very divided on the drama this season. A third say they will quit watching. Oh well.

by Anonymousreply 33May 14, 2022 8:42 PM

Haven't seen an episode maybe since the 2nd or 3rd season. Checked it out again today and surprised how all grown-up the kids are. And they're not ugly or awkward looking like most child actors were. The adults look about the same. Annie Potts looks great.

by Anonymousreply 34May 14, 2022 8:54 PM

R9 Wow that show looks dreadful

by Anonymousreply 35May 14, 2022 8:57 PM

R35 Janbot hates something that isn't Manet. Fuck off, cunt.

by Anonymousreply 36May 14, 2022 8:59 PM

IA was queeny in the beginning.

by Anonymousreply 37May 14, 2022 9:00 PM

R37 You're queeny. Stop projecting, asshole. Isn't there a dank bath house you can present hole at?

by Anonymousreply 38May 14, 2022 9:03 PM

Montana Jordan needs to star in a "Road House" prequel as a young John Salton. That episode when Mary watched the movie a little too often was hilarious, especially the end.

by Anonymousreply 42May 17, 2022 3:14 AM

George sr is by far my favourite character. I love to him him speak. The character I like the least is his colleague Wayne, who is shown as the epitome of all things perfect. The mom is hilarious, the faces she makes and the ways she talks. What I find strange about Sheldon is that he never has a moment's doubt. He deals with a lot of rejection and it never affects his self-esteem. I thought he was intolerable on ABBT and couldn't understand why anyone put up with his smug condescension. it would have been far better if the writers made him gay, like the actor who plays him. Never have I heard a queenier queen.

by Anonymousreply 43May 17, 2022 4:26 AM

"Any normal family would have had Shelton share a bedroom with his older brother, not a sister."

They're twins. It's not that weird to have twins room together as little kids.

by Anonymousreply 44May 17, 2022 4:42 AM

What's up with CBS screwing up Thursday night? It's rare that all the comedies in the 8 to 10 time slot were new episodes. They continually tried to force feed us the awful Afghani show and then the bowling show. And they cancelled B Positive which had some issues (looking at you Linda Lavin) but overall was a good show. Well Les Moonvees or whoever the heck is in charge now if it's not YS, Ghosts or BP I and my 80something parents will continually fight over what to watch in between those shows watching 30 seconds of 60 different channels.

by Anonymousreply 45May 17, 2022 5:00 AM

Meemaw is the breakout character for me. Annie Potts deserves her own show.

by Anonymousreply 46May 17, 2022 9:48 AM

VIDEO = Ian Armitage in DRAG in the season finale.....It is becoming more obvious that IA is not interacting with the entire staff. His lines are minimal.. But he did DRAG which was no surprise at all. I expected Mary to finally hook up with Hot Youth Pastor (which would have been a twist if SHE were the one who cheated)--but the show chickened out. Overall it was a lousy mid season quality episode.

R48 They could send Sheldon off to California, rename the show The Coopers and move on. Of Course poor George has to die

by Anonymousreply 50May 20, 2022 12:27 PM

There’s a definite tone shift this year. I don’t love it, but it makes sense. The kids are older so there’s more adult situations and drama.

George Sr. is turning into an ass. I wonder if Brenda will accidentally spill about her and George’s almost “thing” now that Mary is working at the bowling alley. That would cause more drama.

I liked Craig T. Nelson as Meemaw’s grumpy boyfriend so much. I hope they get back together.

Sheldon was definitely funnier as a young kid. I hope this show ends after season 7. That’d be a good time to stop.

by Anonymousreply 51May 20, 2022 1:03 PM

CBS also cancelled those two of those other shows you talked about(How We Roll and United States of Al) r45.

by Anonymousreply 52May 20, 2022 1:58 PM

I adore Annie Potts. She's a strong lady since she has been living with arthritis and orthopedic issues from a car wreck she was in ages ago. She's in no need of money but seems to enjoy comedy very much. Lady is strong and can do no wrong I tell you.

This show has grown tiresome to me by now. Tired. The overall idea behind it was creative but it's run its course by now to me. Laurie Metcaff has quite the talented daughter though and I like her she'll pop up in things for years to come I bet.

I wonder at what point they will escalate George and Mary’s arguments. Remember the episode when Shelton didn’t like when everyone was fighting and he quoted a screaming match verbatim that Mary and George had?

by Anonymousreply 54May 20, 2022 2:44 PM

Armitage was so pretty playing Mary I actually thought it was the actress who plays Missy in a wig.

by Anonymousreply 56May 21, 2022 6:32 AM

When the "star" is doing scenes with only HIMSELF----it could be that the "star" is so much of a pain in the ass that the rest of the cast don't want to be near him. If this keeps up Sheldon is going to be away at college and only be in scenes calling other characters--like Suzanne used to do on 3s Company.

I just started watching this out of boredom. I like it but I'm only on season 1. I laughed out loud a few times. Laurie Metcalf's daughter looks and sounds so much like her mother.

by Anonymousreply 59June 8, 2023 7:30 PM

^ omg, they are related???

by Anonymousreply 60June 8, 2023 7:56 PM

^ yep, just looked it up - mother/daughter

by Anonymousreply 62June 8, 2023 8:12 PM

The serious subplots are OK with me. Gives the show some depth and allows the actors to grow into their roles. Sheldon is becoming the least interesting character. Love Memaw.! Just keep Georgie in tight jeans and I will continue to watch.

by Anonymousreply 63June 8, 2023 8:34 PM

[quote] Sheldon was definitely funnier as a young kid. I hope this show ends after season 7. That’d be a good time to stop.

Georgie has turned into a fucking stud! It's been fun watching him go from geeky kid to hot studmuffin. And I'm diggin' his 80s pornstar hair. Montana Jordan has wonderfully subtle comedic timing. I laughed my ass off on a recent episode when he questioned his mother why she had taken up sewing. Mary got a little spicy in her reply and Georgie said "aight, don't get sassy".

Sheldon on the other hand has aged out of the character for me. He's gone from cute funny little kid to a smartass teenager who needs a few light slams.

The best character on the show IMO is Meemaw. Annie Potts deserves an Emmy for her performance.

This was when I really started noticing that Montana Jordan was merging into a hotty. He's going to be something in about 10 years when he's got more beef on his body. I hope he keeps working out. He's cut his hair shorter now and it is sexy as hell.

I enjoy the show but notice it did get dark there for awhile. I noticed for a run of episodes it seemed like Zoe Perry was missing or only in scenes without the main cast. Did she have a baby or something that kept her from production?

by Anonymousreply 71June 8, 2023 9:09 PM

George has to die, sooner rather than later. It is canon.

by Anonymousreply 72June 8, 2023 9:13 PM

The dude that plays Georgie is as fug as the day is long and has a mouse voice.

by Anonymousreply 73June 8, 2023 9:36 PM

I’m glad they didn’t have George have an affair with the neighbor.

Annie Potts is the mvp of the show. Meemaw is great.

George will probably die next season.

by Anonymousreply 74June 8, 2023 10:32 PM

How do they explain Young Sheldon's deep voice this last season, as opposed to the queeny squeak he has on BBT? Did they castrate him?

by Anonymousreply 75June 8, 2023 10:47 PM

Some trivia: If you remember back on Big Bang Theory when one of Leonard's high school bullies (Jimmy Speckerman) messaged him and apologized and wanted to visit. Once he was there he got drunk and passed out on Leonard & Sheldon's sofa. Turned out the only reason he wanted to reconnect with Leonard was so Leonard could help him with some start up business. JImmy Speckerman was played by Lance Barber aka George Cooper.

by Anonymousreply 76June 9, 2023 4:04 AM

On BBT, Sheldon notes that his father did have an affair. He also notes specifically that he walked in on his father in bed with another woman when he explained why he always knocks three times. They way older Sheldon describes it, his father had multiple affairs.

The other characters are the show, not Sheldon.

Mary: Go do your homework!

Georgie: What for? I ain't gonna graduate valedictatertorian.

[quote]The dude that plays Georgie is as fug as the day is long and has a mouse voice.

While I don't find him attractive, when the show started, I thought he looked and acted just like the Georgie Jerry O'Connell did in TBBT for Sheldon's wedding.

I could easily see that kid growing up to be that version of Georgie.

by Anonymousreply 98June 10, 2023 2:33 PM

Not sure why the show and TBBT all reference Missy as dumb. She's anything but.

by Anonymousreply 99June 10, 2023 3:44 PM

I’ve never watched TBBT so could someone tell me how often we saw adult Georgie and Missy?

R98 agree, the kid was a good choice as a young jerry O’Connell. (Even though actual kid jerry O’Connell was a chubby guy).

The girl who plays missy was hilarious in the first couple of seasons. I still like her now and agree she’s not dumb- she has people skills.

by Anonymousreply 100June 10, 2023 4:15 PM

They both show up 2 or 3 times. Missy features prominently in one episode where all the other nerds are scrabbling to hook up with her. She grows up to be a hot, stacked brunette.

by Anonymousreply 101June 10, 2023 4:20 PM

As an adult she trolls Sheldon just like the young Missy.

by Anonymousreply 102June 10, 2023 4:22 PM

I’ve always had a problem with Georgie.

He’s greedy, money-loving and too ambitious for his own good. Plus he’s an idiot for dropping out of high school.

Irresponsible, a lying jerk and a horn-dog, too. Those get-rich-quick schemes were ridiculous as well. Hated that when he bought cable he locked his father out of watching.

Yes, I know that he does eventually become legitimately well off, but he just seems like an asshole.

You can’t say it’s because he grew up poor, either. His family, while not destitute, was doing alright. They had a three-bedroom house.

Eh, I just don’t like him.

by Anonymousreply 103June 10, 2023 7:16 PM

The best thing about Young Sheldon is faithfulness to the canon. The actors and their motivations seem fully consistent with the original series. God bless Mary, Meemaw and Missy—these three are so good.

by Anonymousreply 104June 10, 2023 7:24 PM

R103 yet, he matches up so well with TBBT.

by Anonymousreply 105June 10, 2023 7:25 PM

[quote]Previous seasons stream on HBO Max, which is owned by Warner. '

It's just MAX now, sweetie.

by Anonymousreply 106June 10, 2023 7:29 PM

Missy nor Georgie were ever dumb. Dumb is a clinical diagnosis. However, both of them demonstrated multiple times they could be stupid.

by Anonymousreply 107June 10, 2023 8:02 PM

Georgie would've probably let you blow him for $20 in the men's room at Meemaw's gambling room.

by Anonymousreply 108June 16, 2023 4:59 PM

They should just drop canon and say this show takes place in an alternate universe like The Winchesters did. It’s not fair to kill the momentum and just kill off the father just because the timeline says so. They’re trying to pigeon-hole everyone into what they’ll like in TBBT and some characters are too far off to ever become that. Annie Potts is supposed to go from a fun loving meema to a bitter racist granny? How?

Do fans of TBBT even accept this show as canon. I know fans of Sex and the City don’t consider The Carrie Diaries canon.

by Anonymousreply 109June 16, 2023 9:37 PM

It is faithful to canon and that’s a reason to enjoy it even more. Don’t be a downer.

by Anonymousreply 110June 16, 2023 9:57 PM

Annie Potts looks great. If she's had work done, it's good work. I just finally saw the season 6 finale. Did TBBT ever mention Georgie's daughter?

I do seem to recall Sheldon mentioning a girl genius from childhood who turned out having a tragic ending (suicide?) I'm assuming that's Paige.

by Anonymousreply 111June 17, 2023 5:28 AM

Starting binging. It's ridiculous Potts hasn't even been nominated.

Sad that Sheldon's world has to bow to him. The whole family suffers at his whims. If I had spoken to adults the way he does I would have gotten a slap in the face and then made to apologize for making them have to do it.

by Anonymousreply 112September 22, 2023 11:23 AM

Rep 3: shows are rarely consistent on actor and their roles. Rob and Laura Petrie had quite few different parents. I think Buddy Sorel's wife Pickles was played by two different actresses.

The only time I've seen of a show blatantly acknowledging an actor's casting change is the 1950s Burns and Allen show. There was a scene with the neighbors. GB entered and broke the fourth wall by informing the audience that Fred Clark was leaving the show to do a play and the role would now be played by Larry Keating.

A not quite as blatant example is a Bette ep where BM is complaining about how Bewitched substituted Dick York for Dick Sargeant. Her husband is looking in the fridge with his face hidden. He closes the door and is revealed to be a different actor than earlier eps.

by Anonymousreply 113September 22, 2023 12:08 PM

The more I watch the show, the more I see the people are completely loathsome and lacking any moral fiber.

Good god they’re selfish assholes, ALL of them. George is the only sane member of that dysfunctional family.

They’ve turned on Mary’s religiosity to a level where she is completely insane and ridiculous. It was so, so funny when her precious church turned against them and she got fired.

The baby momma would do well to leave with the kid and never return.

They really should end the show next season. Plus the more I see, the more I wish Sheldon hadn’t gotten that damn Nobel Prize. Little asshole didn’t deserve it.

by Anonymousreply 114September 23, 2023 2:38 AM

He's a mean kid. There was one show where he tells the father, "I'm warning you, I'm very unhappy". At that point I would have taken him down to the river...

by Anonymousreply 117September 24, 2023 6:51 PM

The key event in the entire history is George’s sudden death. We can presume it affected them all greatly in different ways—from the canon we know that is the case for Sheldon and Mary. It has to happen…but for the WGA strike I’d fully expect it within several new episodes.

by Anonymousreply 118September 24, 2023 7:05 PM

Annie Potts should be named a national treasure.

I laughed so hard at her in a recent episode I lost my breath. She was outside watching Mary chasing Sheldon around in the garage attempting to force him to come out of his self built protective bubble. Memaw, laughing uproariously, jumped up and scampered back to the house saying 'OH MY GOD I'M GONNA WET MYSELF'!!

Annie Potts is one of the reasons I watch. I almost wet myself laughing at her with Georgie in jail. She kills it on this show.

I love the actress playing Mandy and the one playing Missy. Love Georgie too.

I agree that Sheldon is annoying but he was that way on BBT too and yet, Parsons made Sheldon loveable despite being annoying. I miss BBT. Young Sheldon is a great show and I like the whole Mary loses her faith storyline because as we know, by the time of BBT she's found it again.

[quote]Parsons made Sheldon loveable despite being annoying.

Did he? The great casting of the supporting characters helped A LOT.

The shark was jumped back in Season 4 of "Big Bang Theory."

Everything since than has been money-grabbing repetition.

So the shortened 7th season will be the last.

They’re not going to do another off-shoot for those disfuncional, stupid family members.

They are planning for a sequel to BBT. No word yet on whom it will focus.
